RSVP to our events here 👉 RSVP to help us get more

Registration 👩‍🏫

Registration is opening up for people this week, so we here at ACM feel an
obligation to let our fellow computer science students in on our favorite
ACM-core classes that are being offered this fall.

Classes required in the CSCI department are NOT included, so these are all
courses picked from love. This is a list in no particular order.

CSCI 4011: Automata Theory

MATH 4707: Combinatorics and Graph Theory

MATH 4281: Intro to Modern Algebra

ENGL 1181W: Intro to Shakespeare

CNRC 3201: World of the Hebrew Bible

PHIL 3305: Medical Ethics

PHIL 3009: Existentialism

ARTS 1103: Intro to Printmaking

OJIB 1101: Beginning Ojibwe I

ESCI 1006: Oceanography

LAT 1001: Beginning Latin I

PE 1048: Honors Bowling

Do with this info what you will, but consider taking an extra class or two for
fun each year. It's a lot easier doing interesting classes as an undergrad than
at any other point in your life.

Open House 🛖

Mondays + Fridays 4:30-6:30PM, ACM Clubroom (Keller 2-204)

Hang out, chat, study, be cool, calm, and collected B-) .

Hi ACMers.

Many things to annouce for the club, so let's get down to business.

Elections!!

ACM officer election season is NOW!

As the first step, we have a period where candidates can declare their
candidacy. This can be done at the form below. However, it should be noted:

In order to declare candidacy, you must be a current ACM UMN member

You need two nominations from other current ACM UMN members to support your candidacy

Nomination form will be open until Friday at 5PM. After that, we'll take all proper declarations and everyone will be able to vote!

There are more details within the form itself, so if you have questions, make sure to read the form first. Thanks so much!

Positions are very flexible. Knowing about computers helps, but we also need people that can make cool posters or like making friends with potential members. Talk to us, and we can help find a way to get you involved!

Open House is Wednesday 4-6pm in the ACM Room (Keller 2-204) as always. This can also count towards your 3 events for membership, plus it's a good way to meet people and hang out.

ACM Week 5: TURBO Telescope Project Opportunity

Hi ACM,

First of all, we have a special opportunity to share with you from Professor Pat Kelly:
"Dear ACM,

I'm a professor in the Minnesota Institute for Astrophysics, and our team is constructing two sets of robotically operated telescopes on mountains in New Mexico and Greece.

The principal goals are to find supernovae at the time of explosion and light from radioactive material synthesized when neutron stars and black holes merge. We are planning to search the sky after the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detects gravitational wave emission from the mergers of these extreme objects.

We are using a modified telescope mount that can slew across the sky in less than two seconds and are trying to assemble a number of
different components that will independently position two telescopes
on the mount to cover the area on the sky where the gravitational waves may originate (can be hundreds of square degrees).

Here is a video about the project -- we are running a prototype telescope on the St. Paul campus that we are using for development:

https://twin-cities.umn.edu/news-events/u-m-leading-1-million-grant-build-superfast-turbo-telescopes

A current effort is to develop a software pipeline to process 1.3 Gigapixels of imaging every thirty seconds and identify candidate explosions. We have figured out a way to use the new 4090 GPU's from NVidia to process the images extremely rapidly (<10 seconds), and are now working on several challenges including using machine learning to distinguish between explosions and artifacts in the images. We need a lot of help!

If there are any students with experience with robotics, motor control, or software who might want to join, I would be very interested in working with them or employing them during the school year to work on the project. Very happy to show students around the lab and the prototype."

UNIX Class #3 this Tuesday, Oct. 1, 5:30pm in Amundson B75! This week is about your Programming Environment! Come for free pizza, stay for genuinely useful knowledge that will inevitably be useful for your classes at some point (professors may simply expect you to know this stuff). Remember to RSVP so we get enough pizza. Next week's topic is Dependencies & Nix.

Other Important ACM Notices:

ACM is closed for rest of day today (Monday 9/30) for carpet cleaning.
If you want to get ACM member benefits (clubroom door access, free server/VM, extra discord channels), you must:
Come and sign in to 3 events.
    Fill out member form (acm.umn.edu/member).
Notify an officer that you completed the form.

Come to Open House Wednesday 4-6pm in Keller 2-204 (ACM room).

See you and good luck,

Week 2 and we're already going strong. Notable announcements for this week:

Our About ACM dates were moved to Tuesday, Sept. 10 (tonight!) and Thursday, Sept. 12, still at 5pm in Keller 2-204 for each. If you're new, we'd love to see you at one of the two days, just try to RSVP if you plan on attending. (And join the Discord to keep up with events and schedule changes like these in real time.)

We'll also be hosting our first Open House of the year this Wednesday at 5pm, so come hang with us in the ACM room (Keller 2-204), or use this as an opportunity to get a sampling of the club if you can't make it to About ACM.

UNIX Classes are getting started next week (Sept. 17, 5:30pm in Amundson B75)! These are a good way to learn essential skills that you will need for your classes and beyond, beginning with shell basics for the first class. RSVP for free pizza!

About ACM

For those who are new, we will be running two nights of About ACM, first on Thursday, Sept. 5 and then on Wednesday, Sept. 11, both at 5pm in Keller Hall Room 2-204. We’ll show you around the clubroom, let you know what we do and how you can get involved, and more. It’s a casual event (as all our events are), we only ask that you if you plan on attending you RSVP for your preferred day at acm.umn.edu/rsvp.

Open House (But Not This Week!)

Open houses for this semester will be every Wednesday 4-6pm, except for this week. During this time, we welcome you to hang with us in the ACM room, talk to us and each other, just soak up the space, whatever you’d like.
UNIX Classes

Before you know it, we will be hosting our popular UNIX classes. Look forward to the first one on 9/17, and stay tuned for more info.

Shout out to newheads and oldheads alike and thank you everyone for being here. :)

Capture the Flag

One of our big events this semester, Capture the Flag is a grand tour and test of your cybersecurity skills and knowledge!

The objective: find hidden strings (known as "flags") within literally anything we're throwing at you - from web servers and applications to photo files and potentially even more.

The techniques: anything and everything a cool person would use, from reading object dumps and understanding code to sleuthing and appreciating art on the internet!

Capture the Flag is a beginner-friendly event, so feel free to show up no matter what you feel your skill level is! We'll be here to show off the techniques commonly found in CTF challenges, and some of the flags can be extracted in very unexpected ways!

Capture the Flag kicks off at Keller Hall 3-111 on Thursday March 14 at 6:00PM-8:00PM! Don't worry if you can't come in-person, though! The CTF server runs for 24 hours after the kickoff - and you'll have the chance to compete remotely at https://ctf.acm.umn.edu/

Microhack update

Thanks to everyone who showed interest in Microhack, we have good news! The hacking period for Microhack will be held from 6pm Friday, March 22 to 6pm Sunday, March 24. We'll be starting with an (optional) kickoff event in Keller 3-230 at 5:30pm on March 22, so mark your calendars! If you are interested, please join the Microhack discord server. All further information will be communicated in this server, including the link to the Devpost and more updates as the event gets closer. Hope to see you all at kickoff!

Open House

Our Open House for this semester will be every Wednesday 4:00PM - 6:00PM! Come hang out with us at the ACM Club Room at Keller 2-204! Come hang, introduce yourself, lounge and chill. We promise we don't bite!he door lock on Keller 2-204 does not work right now (>_<), but we anticipate the door lock working for Open House. If it does, drop by for a quick celebration! If not, we'll let you know on our Discord

Hello all,

Now that the fall semester is officially underway, the ACM officers have some announcements we'd like to share with our members:

Reduced Room Access
In order to attempt to combat the spread of COVID-19, regular member access to our room in Keller Hall has been suspended for the foreseeable future. If you absolutely need to enter the room for some reason, you can email our systems administrator Hemant at gouni008@umn.edu, or message him on our Discord.

Membership Fees Waived
On a related note, because our members will no longer have access to the resources previously available to them in our room in Keller Hall, we have decided to waive our membership fees for the 2020-2021 school year. Anyone who was a paid member last semester, spring 2020, will continue to be counted as a paid member until the pandemic has ended. Any new members who would like access to the paid member only channels in our Discord or who would like access to our server hardware can fill out this form: https://forms.gle/hZzG1uRBu6kAKL3dA/

Online Social Hour
Starting today, 9/15, ACM will be hosting an informal online hangout in our Discord voice channel every Tuesday from 5pm to 6pm. All members are welcome and encouraged to join us and talk about computers, your classes, or whatever else is on your mind.

Online Events
Because of the ongoing pandemic, we have been forced to cancel some of our events. However, we are still planning to hold as many of our regular events as we can in an online format, including our resume and interview prep event, software design competition, jeopardy-style capture the flag competition, UNIX classes, and academic paper reading group. We'll be adding more details about these events to our website over the next few days, and announcing more specifics closer to the events.

Server Hardware
As a reminder, ACM has server hardware available to any of our members who are interested. If you would like us to set you up with a VM, you can contact our sys admin Hemant over email or Discord.

What was MinneHack 2020?

During MinneHack 2020 student programmers competed over a 24-hour event to build the best project on a theme. The event was attended by 310 hackers, around 50 corporate sponsors and mentors, and run by 8 staff and a number of awesome voulenteers. The prompt this year was: develop a solution for local communities to help them foster social good.

First Place: cleanse

"Our app uses an array of sensors to measure various factors in your house that may cause carbon emissions by unwanted means. Factors such as humidity, temperature, and water leaks are measured. Additionally, an ultrasonic sensor is used to tell whether a door is left open. By informing the user of how many carbon emissions these factors cause, the user can implement ways to reduce carbon emissions in their house and community and therefore lower a community's carbon footprint and better their quality of life. The app also includes a reward system that incentivizes users to make more green choices."

Second Place: Power My Tech

"What we've done is create a system the not only uses existed energy that is wasted but tracks all of the renewable energy and credits your account. We track various devices on your account to view the amount of savings for all the energy you help save. At the end, you can transfer your savings to Bitcoin. It's that easy."

Third Place: SnapArt

"After an artist finishes an art installation around the community, they can upload it SnapArt with info about themselves, the artwork, and where people can find them online. Community members can then snap a picture of the artwork and learn more about it."

Best UIPath Automation Hack: Teacher's Pet

"Teacher's Pet is WebApp / Robot that allows teachers to teach their lessons to students that aren't present without the hassle of setting up a complicated recording system. The camera it is attached to is built with facial recognition to detect the Teacher and start the class. Once the program is ran, students who are viewing the WebApp will then be able to see, hear, read, and follow along the teacher. There is a function that allows the student to take a screen shot of the whiteboard, and there is a designated area that will translate what is on the whiteboard onto the WebApp. Along with that, the WebApp also translates the video audio that's coming in from the live feed, and it also has the feature to follow the teacher as they move around the classroom."

Best use of Google Cloud: World Reader

"Our team knows some friends who are visually impaired, so we wanted to make something to keep them safe and help them better understand their environment. It takes input images from either the camera or the storage and interpret the content of the image in natural language. It also read the content descriptions out loud for its users."

Best Use of MongoDB Atlas AND Popular Choice: TrashMaps

"TrashMaps uses an IR break beam to count how many items are thrown away into a trash can, and detect if the trash can is full. It then stores this information in a database which a web interface uses to display the fullness and usage data of trash cans. This interface also integrates a map feature to map trash can ids to locations in the real world."

Most Creative Radar.io Hack: VoteR

"This app connects helps voters find polling stations near them, as well as lists candidates who are up for election, and the office they are running for without requiring them to enter information on an outside site. This also pairs people who need a ride to a polling station with those who are able to assist and give rides."

The Disability Resource Center also wanted us to let you all know about an employment opportunity at the U. They are currently looking for students who have taken CSCI 4061 and/or CSCI 5304 for employment as an Access Assistant Tutor through their office.

Also, later in the semester, we will be hosting another CTF! This will be "trivia-style" online sets of cybersecurity challenges that competitors complete on their own to earn points, the winner being the team with the most points after a fixed amount of time. These challenges are practical applications of skills including cryptography, networking, web security, stenography, scripting, and more! We are running one of these events on December 3rd, 2019. This is a low-key event, and would be a great first practical security experience!

The Software Design Competition (SDC) is an annual event where students
work in teams to design software solutions to a prompt. This year the
prompt for SDC was:

Citizens are frequently told to be civically engaged: involved in their communities, registered to vote, donating to nonprofits, etc. Many people find it to fulfill all of these responsibilities.
You are tasked with first designing, and then building a software application or service that can help foster civic engagement. That is, your program should people fulfill their civic duties and interact productively with their government.

This year we added a week to the competition to give students a chance to
implement their design. We saw many great ideas ranging from Tinder for
politicians to an app that helps organizations reach volunteers. The
competition was close but in the end two teams came out on top.

First Place Overall: Polliato

This app was designed to help voters connect with the politicians on their
ballot. Based on the users home of record, it created a ballot identical to
what one would see the day they vote. One could then click
on each candidate and it would show the candidates contact information
and social media feed. Then one could keep track of which candidate they
would vote for when it came time to hit the polls.

From the left: Marcus Virginia, Kevin Maldonado, Alec Lorimer, Samuel Hanson

"This idea came to us after we all agreed, that most of the time, we were very ill-informed about the candidates we were voting for. Then in came Polliato. We wanted an easy way to get updates about candidates we cared about, and learn about candidates we have never heard about."

-Marcus

Second Place Overall: MOB

The MOB team submitted a web app that is just as likely to inspire as it
is to incite. A creative approach to the prompt, this application allows
users to form 'mobs' and get groups of people together for events. Users
create an event, others can join in on the mob and follow the activities of
other users.

From the left: Charlie Vuong, Lukas Kelsey-Friedemann

"Our approach was to take the ideals and political causes of individuals and fascilitate taking action. We want people to get excited about their movements and ideals, and hopefully get other people behind their mobs as well."

Hello ACM@UMN members,

Hope you're all enjoying your summers. Here are some of the events we have coming up this summer and early next semester:

Software Development Competition: The Software Development Competition, or SDC for short, is like a hackathon in miniature. Students are tasked with designing a piece of software to solve a problem. They then create a concept and prototype a solution to fit the requirements of the problem. The competition is spread over two weeks. During the first week, competitors ideate and design their concept. New this year, competitors can use the second week to implement a prototype of their idea. The first meeting will be held on October 16th, and participation is free. There will be prizes, to be determined.

Capture the Flag Competition: On November 8th, we'll be holding a kickoff event for our CTF in Keller Hall, where we'll do a gentle introduction to CTF. You don't have to come to be able to compete, but if you're not too familiar with CTFs yet, it'll definitely cover all the basics you need to know before you dive in headfirst. The competition will then run on for the rest of the week online. You don't need to have any background in computer science or programming to participate in the very first CTF, but we do want you to come with an open mind ready to learn. The competition will be covering topics such as analyzing programs for bugs, reverse engineering, basic web technologies, cyberforensics, cryptographic techniques and more!

Are you interested in participating in outreach to middle school students? Join the STEM Outreach Coalition! The STEMOC is a coalition of CSE student groups designing and presenting STEM curriculum to middle school students at a local school. Participating groups are required to have a representative and alternate available for STEMOC planning meetings and general members available participate in regular school visits throughout the school year. Please email acm@umn.edu if you are interested in participating in this program!

Code42 is interested in hosting our members at their Minneapolis headquarters on September 25th from 1-3 P.M. There will be a tour of their facilities and a meeting with some of their dev team and their leadership. Read more about Code42 on their website. There is room for 20 people on the site visit. Please let us know if you are interested and if you (would be willing to drive others to the event/need a ride) as soon as possible.

Returning ACMUMN members must pay the membership fee before the end of August to maintain paid member status. The membership fee can be paid to any officer. Also, starting this semester, the membership fee has been lowered to five dollars per semester.
